Kick-off in Austria – Formula 1 weekend in Spielberg

Their first destination was Spielberg, where Ron fulfilled a long-held dream: to experience the Grand Prix live. Given the exorbitant hotel prices, the camper proved to be the perfect solution. Their pitch was located in an inconspicuous field near a farmer, but it was affordable and offered sufficient distance from the hustle and bustle.

With the e-bikes mounted on the HYMER Backrack+, they reached the racetrack relaxed and traffic-free. This allowed them to spend the entire weekend in the midst of the Formula 1 action and end the day in the evening with like-minded people. The vehicle itself was a constant topic of conversation and attracted the attention of other motorsport and camping fans.

After the last race, another advantage of this flexible travel option became apparent: While endless lines of cars snaked through the village, Ron and Elisa were already on the motorway – in high spirits and with their next destination in sight.

Kreuzer Genusshof in Friesach – a little paradise

The next stop was the Kreuzer Genusshof in Friesach – a place that immediately impressed with its warm hospitality. Ron and Elisa were welcomed with a generous aperitif platter featuring produce from the farm. Their pitch was located in the middle of a meadow and offered unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains – peace, authenticity, and pure nature, far from large campsites.

Thanks to the self-sufficiency of the HYMER Grand Canyon S CrossOver, the stay was completely independent. With its own bathroom, shower, two toilet cassettes, solar panel system, and water filter, the compact vehicle offers everything you need for several days away from any infrastructure.

What was particularly impressive was the passion with which Christian and Erich run their farm. In addition to the actual farm, where the animals can roam freely and develop, there is a small farm shop and an idyllic swimming pond. Social gatherings with other campers offered the opportunity to exchange tips and experiences.

A cultural highlight was the hike to the imposing Friesach Castle complex. For years, a hilltop castle has been built there, stone by stone, using medieval methods – without any modern machinery.

The old town itself also transported the couple back to times gone by: surrounded by moats and mighty walls, with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and small cafés. A place that uniquely combines relaxation and history.

Onward journey to Slovenia

After a relaxing few days in Friesach, Ron and Elisa continued their journey south. Instead of taking the direct, toll-paying route, they deliberately opted for smaller back roads. The detour led through tight curves, wide valleys, and dense forests—a spectacular landscape that had already impressed them along the way. Despite the longer drive, both agreed: every extra minute was worth it.

Tip for travellers: If you're in a hurry, you can choose to take the Autobahn. Please note, however, that motorways in Austria are subject to tolls, and a vignette (vignette sticker) is required for vehicles up to 3.5 tons.

Vehicles over 3.5 tons require the GO-Box system in Austria. This electronic toll box automatically registers every journey on motorways and expressways. The fees can be substantial depending on the route, but they eliminate the risk of accidentally entering a toll road without authorization.

Arrival in the Soča Valley and at Camp Triglav

Ron and Elisa reached the Soča Valley via a narrow mountain pass. The winding road led through dense forests, past crystal-clear mountain streams, and repeatedly offered impressive views of the Julian Alps. With the compact and manoeuvrable HYMER Grand Canyon S CrossOver, they mastered the narrow passages with ease – even where the road ran close to the slope.

Arriving at Camp Triglav, they chose a pitch right by the turquoise waters. Thanks to all-wheel drive, reaching the remote spot was no problem. The vehicle's self-sufficiency allowed them to camp comfortably and independently, far from the restrooms.

After the drive, the two settled into their cosy bed, exhausted but happy. With the windows open and the soothing sound of the Soča River in the background, they quickly fell asleep.

Things to do in the Soča Valley

Thanks to its compactness and manoeuvrability, the HYMER GCS CrossOver proved to be the ideal travel companion on the narrow roads of the Soča Valley, where tight bends require skilled driving skills.

The region boasts spectacular scenery and is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The river shimmers in an almost unreal turquoise, and new photo opportunities await around every corner: crystal-clear streams, rushing waterfalls, deep gorges, and hiking trails leading to breathtaking viewpoints. Every day in the valley is a little adventure. Sometimes relaxing by the water, sometimes with your hiking boots laced up high in the mountains.

Important note for hikers: The right equipment is essential. Although the trails are well-maintained, they can lead over slippery rocks, roots, and steep slopes. Sturdy footwear and appropriate gear are essential to enjoy the hikes safely.

Ron and Elisa used their time in the Soča Valley not only for hiking but also to extensively test their e-bikes. They are perfectly suited to the mountainous terrain, whether it's long climbs, gravel paths, or spontaneous detours to viewpoints that would otherwise be difficult to reach. Thanks to the HYMER Backrack+, transporting the bikes was incredibly easy.

They had a special encounter with a motorcycling couple who had already covered 500,000 kilometres on their motorcycle. The rider, who also owns a HYMER, showed great interest in the Backrack+ and was enthusiastic about it. He was keen to get one for himself.

In addition to hiking and cycling, the Soča Valley promises many other adventures and activities, such as kayaking and rafting, which, however, they didn't have time for this time. Ron and Elisa longed for peace and space and gave up on further sporting activities.

Across the border to Italy

After crossing the border into Italy, the two experienced an amusing incident. They were stopped by customs officials who were less interested in conducting a search. Instead, the HYMER Grand Canyon S CrossOver caught everyone's attention.

A spontaneous room tour followed, during which the officials—themselves avid camping enthusiasts—took curious peeks inside and chatted about the amenities, storage space, and all-wheel drive. When the travellers mentioned their planned route, one of the officials laughingly asked, "And... does it drive well?" Of course, Elisa and Ron confirmed this without hesitation. With a smile and a friendly wave, the officials dismissed them. It was the most relaxed customs inspection they had ever experienced.

The onward journey turned out to be a pure adventure through spectacular scenery – sometimes Alpine, sometimes with a Mediterranean touch. The road was narrow and without cell reception, but the surroundings were a true gem. The route led them through dense forests and over small bridges beneath which crystal-clear streams flowed. They made brief photo stops every now and then.

And once again, they demonstrated what makes traveling in a motorhome so flexible and special: Although the original plans called for a direct drive to the Dolomites, a quick coffee break turned into a stopover at the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Prealpi Giulie. The park and the surrounding region impressed the couple so much that they decided to stay there for two nights. They strolled along the river and enjoyed the tranquillity, the rushing rivers, and the solitary hikes through pristine landscapes.

In the evening, the travellers cooked a hearty meal and treated themselves to a glass of wine under the endless starry sky, savouring the feeling of being in exactly the right place. Thanks to the mosquito net from HYMER Original Parts, they were able to leave both rear doors wide open while they lay in bed, falling asleep with a clear view of the outdoors. They were so close to nature that it almost felt like camping, but with significantly more comfort.

A short break turned into a place to stay—because the most beautiful places are often the ones you didn't plan.

The last days in the Dolomites

For the last few days, Ron and Elisa were drawn to the Dolomites – a mountain world that never ceases to captivate them. Rugged rock formations, lush green alpine meadows, and the mesmerizing play of light and shadow make this region an unforgettable destination time and time again.

The two chose a small hiking parking lot where overnight stays are permitted – provided they stop at the adjacent mountain hut. A fair solution that not only makes travel easier but also supports local businesses. And so, in the evening, they found themselves alone in their HYMER Grand Canyon S CrossOver, surrounded by nature.

An unexpected thunderstorm

On the first afternoon, Elisa set out alone for a short exploration, while Ron had already started cooking in the camper. The sky was clear, the rain radar showed nothing unusual – perfect conditions for a short hike in the mountains.

But as so often happens in the Alps, the weather changed faster than expected. Within minutes, dark clouds gathered, thunder began to roll, and lightning lit up the sky. Elisa felt a strong sense of unease.

In a panic, she called Ron and asked him to immediately drive to her in the HYMER Grand Canyon S CrossOver. It was a huge relief for Elisa when she spotted the familiar vehicle on the gravel road a few minutes later and found shelter inside.

It was precisely in this situation that the power of the all-wheel drive became apparent: Steep sections, loose ground, and the muddy path would have been almost impossible to negotiate without it. Thus, the spontaneous rescue operation went smoothly – and Ron and Elisa agreed: they had never been so pleased with their vehicle's off-road capabilities.

Important note: In the mountains, the weather can change in a matter of minutes. Therefore, it's important to check the current weather conditions before every hike and monitor your progress carefully.

Rifugio Chiampizzulon – a worthwhile circular tour

The following days, the weather was at its best: bright skies, clear visibility, and no thunderstorms in the distance. Ron and Elisa retook the hike they had abandoned the previous day – the circular tour to Rifugio Chiampizzulon in the Friulian Dolomites Nature Park.

On the hut's sunny terrace, they enjoyed pasta and cappuccino and the impressive views and tranquillity of the surrounding mountains.

Like all the tours they have undertaken in the Dolomites so far, they highly recommend this hike. On platforms like Komoot, the route, including the hiking parking lot, can be found under the name "Rifugio Chiampizzulon – Circular Tour in the Friulian Dolomites Nature Park" – an ideal option for anyone who wants to experience the Dolomites off the beaten track.

Farewell to the mountains

After these impressive days, it was time to say goodbye. With a last look at the shining mountain peaks, Ron and Elisa packed their things and headed home. Back in Bad Waldsee, they said goodbye to their faithful companion on wheels, the HYMER Grand Canyon S CrossOver. The memories of Austria, Slovenia, and Italy remain – as does the anticipation of the next tour.
